Being able to press to handstand is an amazing feeling of strength and control.

One of the things I love about the press is that it requires so many different components. This can make it a very challenging skill to learn. But I believe you can do it with programming that addresses your own specific needs.

I created this program for intermediate handbalancers who need help progressing to the next level. Throughout the program you can submit videos to me for detailed feedback and help so that you continue to improve and stay motivated throughout your journey.

Course structure

Theory, assessments, personalised programming and 6 skill workouts

I understand that not everyone needs the same program to learn the press to handstand. You may already have many attributes that you need or you may be missing something that you don't even know is required. Using 4 simple assessments your program will be personalised to address exactly what you need.

You will progress through the course at your own pace guided by simple end of week check-ins. These will help you monitor your progress as well as determine whether or not to progress to the next stage. This journey is your own, I want you to have the freedom and flexibility to move at a pace that fits your own progress, schedule, family, work and life outside of handstands (yes this exists).

Theory module

I explain the technique that I use to teach the press to handstand using simple explanations, videos, pictures and illustrations.

Assessment module

There are 4 simple assessments to take that will help personalise your program to address your individual areas of opportunity.

Foundation of the press

The foundation module will help build the foundation of strength, flexibility and skill that you need to achieve the press. There are two Workouts in this module.

Your handstand coach: Kirsty Grosart

In my youth, I was national gymnastics champion and a competitive coach in Scotland. An injury ended my career as a gymnast. But, in my thirties, I re-discovered the joy of handbalancing and bodyweight fitness in my garage.

Over the past 5 years I have coached many adults on how to press to handstand. I learned early on that teaching handstands to adults is not the same as teaching kids. Through my hands-on experience with students of all ages and experiences, I developed my press to handstand course and teaching approach. I have learned from some of the best teachers in the industry but I have learned the most from my students and their journeys to the press to handstand.

This course is designed for intermediate hand-balancers.

  • If you are comfortable kicking up to handstand away from the wall, I will help you refine your line for the press to handstand.
  • If you are able to hold a handstand for 5 seconds or more, I will help you increase your balance so that you have the control to press.
  • If your overhead or pancake mobility is restricted I will help you increase your range of motion. However, you may be better to focus on flexibility for a while before taking the course. Email me at kirsty@garagegymgirl.com if you are unsure and I'll help you decide.
  • If you are unable to kick up away from the wall or find balance then I suggest participating in my Master the Handstand program first.


  • The material is all available online in a private website - the Garage Gym Girl Online Academy - so you will have access to all the instructional videos and programming at any time.
  • You will also be able to download a pdf of the workouts for the week.
  • You will have lifetime access to this, including updates and changes.


  • For the coaching, you will submit videos to me via email and I will give you feedback so the time difference is not a big deal.


  • I suggest that you do 2 press to handstand workouts a week.
  • Based on your assessment you may also be assigned flexibility work to do each week.
  • The workouts are challenging and should take between 60 and 90 minutes to complete. However, I have included modifications so that you can customise the workouts to fit your own schedule. I have included modifications such that you will be doing four 30-45 minute workouts a week.

Do I need special equipment to take part?

  • While not essential it is very beneficial if you have access to a foam roller.
  • Access to a wall and sufficient space that you feel comfortable kicking up to handstand and bailing.
  • A pull-up bar or rings (not essential but beneficial).
  • Bench, box or chairs of varying height.
  • A device to time yourself.
  • A device to film yourself, with a tripod if possible. For all my videos I use my iphone and a basic iphone tripod (prior to getting a tripod I used to balance my phone on boxes and often ended up with a video of the floor). This is the tripod that I use.
  • Internet access. You can download a pdf of each workout, but the rest of the content requires access to the internet.
